Palin
sans Party: A Review of Sarah
Takes on Big Oil, a new book
from PNA Publishing
By Mary Odden
Editor and publisher
Copper River Record
During the recent election
campaign, some Alaskans I know
found themselves in the very
weird position of defending an
antediluvian Sarah Palin who got
washed away by national politics
in August. That Sarah Palin, our
Governor, had thrown her
energetic weight against a
cartel of corrupt politicians
and oil company monopoly.
Importantly, from 2006 -2008,
she was visibly joined in her
efforts by people of various
political affiliations and the
bond that transcended those
affiliations was an interest in
accountability to the people of
Alaska.

The view from
Stonewater: A review of Sarah
takes on Big Oil
Published in
October 2008 in the middle of
the 2008 U.S. presidential
campaign, Sarah Takes on Big Oil
should have gotten more press
coverage, because it is a
no-nonsense reportorial account
of the state of Alaska versus
the Big Three oil companies
regarding tapping into the
hundreds of thousands of cubic
feet of natural gas that are
available in Alaska. It focuses
in particular on the success of
the Sarah Palin administration
to pass three important pieces
of legislation to move the
natural gas pipeline project
forward.
Certainly, this story, if given
proper play in the media - or
any play at all - would have
gone a long way towards stifling
the notion that this woman is
dumb and uninformed.
use the word reportorial with
great purpose here, because Kay
Cashman is the publisher and
executive editor of "Petroleum
News", and Kristen Nelson is the
editor in chief of this weekly
newspaper that covers the energy
industry in Alaska. As such, you
know you are getting the facts.
Occasionally, however, those
facts can bog down the general
interest reader with so many
details that it becomes a bit
dry to those of us not up on the
minutiae of the energy industry.
Nevertheless, Cashman and Nelson
do provide helpful graphs and
sidebars to define some of the
terms and numbers. They also
include head shots of all of the
key players, which serves to
differentiate and humanize what
would otherwise be a parade of
faceless names that would be
hard to keep track of. There is
also a center spread of
beautiful photographs by Judy
Patrick along with a helpful map
of Alaska's oil and gas fields.

Alaska, thank you for raising up
Sarah Palin and loaning her to
us for the past few months.
We needed her so much. Her
matter-of-fact honesty and
infectious vitality gave hope to
those of us who had given up
believing that a peoples
candidate could ever truly
exist outside of a
speechwriters imagination.
She was a clear voice of reason,
firmly but calmly warning of the
dangers our nation faces, and
forthrightly delivering a
challenge to not remain
passively idle as the foundation
blocks of our nation are removed
right out from under us. Sarah
could pop the balloons of
self-puffery lofted up by her
opponents, yet do so with a wink
and a smile. When the
press tried to put up clouds of
defamation against her children,
the radiance of her love for
every member of her family
pierced like welcome sunbeams
through those clouds. We
were awed by her ability to keep
her bearings and remain true to
her destination even as she was
being lashed by the constant
storm of criticism poured on her
by the media. It was your
land, your people, and your way
of life that trained her up to
be able to do that.
Thank you, Alaska.
Do we love her and look
forward to seeing her again on
the national stage?
You betcha.

This is an excellent, totally
unbiased, factual review of the
political career of Sarah Palin
as she worked to try to
encourage the construction of a
gas pipeline to bring the huge
supplies of natural gas from
Alaska's North Slope to market
in the MIdwest. In a time of
incredible hype, it is
refreshing to read something
believable. Regardless of one's
political persuasion, the book
provides valid information that
everyone should have in
evaluating the qualifications of
Sarah Palin to fill the role of
Vice President.

geologist in Santa Fe, New

Couldnt put the book down.
Fantastic job, ladies. Kay
Cashman, I can tell you like
Palin. I couldnt tell with
Kristen Nelsons chapters. But
it was still a very balanced
piece of journalism. Im an
Obama fan, but Im voting for
McCain, because if Palin comes
back to Alaska, I think shell
take too tough of a stance with
BP Exploration and
ConocoPhillips. We need a gas
pipeline for our North Slope
reserves. So what if the state
doesnt get anything out of it?
The citizens of Alaska will get
a lot of jobs. And Ill get to
stay here.

Habitat another hot button
for Palin
By Stefan Milkowski
For Sarah takes on Big Oil
Even before Sarah Palin took
office in late 2006, she faced a
hot-button development issue in
how the state handled wildlife
protection. Her predecessor,
Gov. Frank Murkowski, had moved
the permitting functions of the
states Division of Habitat and
Restoration from the Department
of Fish and Game to the
Department of Natural Resources,
or DNR, by executive order in
February 2003.
Murkowski, who also transferred
the office of coastal management
to DNR, said at the time that
his goal was to streamline the
permitting process to encourage
resource development. To
revitalize the resource
industries, he said in his first
state of the state address the
month before, We have to remove
the obstacles over which we have
control.

The $20-25 billion being tossed
around in Sarah Palin takes on
Big Oil as the cost to build the
pipeline seems like a lot of
money. However, if you look at
the profits for the three major
oil companies involved, Exxon
Mobil, BP, and ConocoPhillips,
that value does not loom as
large. The Second Quarter 2008
profits announced earlier this
year by these three companies totaled $26.69 billion. In
other words, those companies
could pay cash to build the
pipeline with one quarter of one
year's profits, and still have
enough left over to have a few
Board meetings. And they would
still have the profits from the
other three quarters of 2008 to
worry about.

Sarah Palin Takes on big Oil: A
Book Preview
There is a new book out on Sarah
Palin describing factually how
she took on the oil industry in
Alaska. Since it's not tainted
with sensationalist bias, it
probably won't be a best-seller.
I've read only the excerpt online. I have no idea if it is pro-Sarah or anti-Sarah from what I read. It just appears that the authors wrote the bulk of the material prior to the vice presidential nomination and didn't have an agenda.
