Hilcorp adding to Ivan River facilities

A plan of operations amendment application from Hilcorp Alaska for facilities installation at the Ivan River pad has been approved by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Oil and Gas.

As is typical of its operations, Hilcorp has been working to increase production at Ivan River, a gas field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Hilcorp became operator at Ivan River in January 2012, taking over from Union Oil Company of California.

In a May approval of the 52nd plan of development for Ivan River, the division said the unit was formed in 1967 and currently includes some 2,295 acres and two participating areas, the Sterling-Beluga Gas PA and the Tyonek Gas PA.

In the 52nd POD, which covers June 1 through May 31, 2023, Hilcorp said it planned to finish drilling the IRU 241-01 well, started in 2021, in the third and fourth quarters of this year.

Drilling began on the IRU 241-01 targeting the Sterling and Beluga gas sands in the fourth quarter of 2021, Hilcorp said, but it was not able to finish the drilling “due to Cook Inlet ice conditions brought on by a period of extended cold” which forced suspension of the well.

Planned facility work included installing a facility tie-in pipeline and equipment upgrade on the IRU pad following completion of the IRU 241-01 and installing a heater/separator as needed following completion of the well.

New production in August

Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission records show the IRU 241-01 well was completed in early August. It began producing that same month, contributing 13,537 thousand cubic feet, mcf, to Ivan River production during that month and 158,746 mcf during September. (September is the most recent month for which production data is available from AOGCC, which reports by well and field on a month-delay basis.)

Ivan River field production averaged 9,183 mcf per day in August. In September it averaged 14,018 mcf per day, up 52.7% from August, and up 94.2% from September 2021, when the field averaged 7,217 mcf per day.

Facilities work approved by the division Nov. 14 includes installation of four skid-mounted separators and flowlines and installation of two line heaters and flowlines.

Ivan River is one of a group of smaller Hilcorp west side gas fields northeast of the Beluga River gas field, which Hilcorp operates on behalf of majority owner Chugach Electric Association.
